Were presidential campaigns always as bitter as they have been in recent years? Or is the current style of campaigning a new political development? In this revised and updated edition of Presidential Campaigns the answers to these questions are clear: the race for the presidency, although at times mean and nasty, has always been an endlessly entertaining and highly charged spectacle. This book unveils the whole history of American presidential elections, from the seamless ascent of General George Washington to the bitterly contested election of George W. Bush, bringing these boisterous contests to life in all their richness and complexity. Back in the nineteenth century, the invective at election time was exuberant and the mudslinging unrestrained; a candidate might be called everything from a carbuncle-faced old drunkard to a howling atheist. But there was plenty of fun and games, too, with songs and slogans, speeches and parades, all livening up the scene in order to get people to the polls. Presidential Campaigns takes note of the serious side of elections even as it documents the frenzy, frolic and the sleaze. Each chapter contains a brief essay describing an election and presenting "campaign highlights" that bring to life the quadrennial confrontation in all its Shame and glory. With a postscript analysing the major changes in the ways Americans have chosen their Presidents from Washington's time to the present, Presidential Campaigns gives the reader a full picture of this somewhat flawed procedure.

- he bushwhackers crowded closer a d our me , se si g rouble, drew ear also. "Across he Plai s i '64" - A a Dell Cli ki beard Aboli io is - произошло от слова o abolish - отменять, уничтожать. - he sligh es ma ifes a io of sympa hy or jus ice oward a perso of color, was de ou ced as aboli io ism; a d he ame of aboli io is , subjec ed i s bearer o frigh ful liabili ies "My Bo dage a d My Freedom"- Frederick Douglass Aboli io dom - произошло от слова aboli io - отмена, уничтожение (рабства).

Incumbent President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner and sworn in on December 30, despite opposition leader Raila Odinga' s claims of victory. There is agreement in the international community that the elections were at least partially manipulated. In July 2008, an exit poll commissioned by the US was released, revealing that Odinga won the election by a comfortable margin of 6%, 46% to 40%, well outside of the exit poll' s 1. 3% margin of error. The election was strongly marked by tribalism, with Kibaki a member of the traditionally dominant Kikuyu ethnic group getting much support amongst people of Central Kenya i. e. Kikuyu and neighbouring groups like Embu and Meru.

It is estimated that more than three-fourths of Afghanistan' s nearly 10 million registered voters cast ballots. The election was overseen by the Joint Electoral Management Body, vice-chaired by American diplomat Ray Kennedy. After some accusations of fraud circulated on the day of the election, at least fifteen candidates declared that they were boycotting the ballot, but the boycott dissolved when the United Nations announced it would set up a three-person independent panel to investigate the charges of irregularities. The panel included a former Canadian diplomat and a Swedish electoral expert, and the third member was later named by the European Union. The date was originally set for July 5, 2004. The elections were twice postponed, first until September, and then until October. Candidates for president also nominated two vice- presidential candidates. Hamid Karzai won the election with 55. 4% of the votes and three times more votes than any other candidate. Twelve candidates received less than 1% of the vote. An election to the office of President of Afghanistan was held on October 9, 2004.

With the opposition Federalist Party in collapse, Madison' s Secretary of State, James Monroe, had an advantage in winning the nomination against a divided opposition. Monroe won the electoral college by the wide margin of 183 to 34. The previous four years were dominated by the War of 1812. While it had not ended in victory, the peace was nonetheless satisfactory to the American people, and the Democratic-Republicans received the credit for its prosecution. The Federalists had been discredited by their opposition to the war and secessionist rhetoric from New England. Furthermore, President Madison had adopted such Federalist policies as a national bank and protective tariffs, which would give the Federalists few issues to campaign on. The United States presidential election of 1816 came at the end of the two-term presidency of Democratic-Republican James Madison. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles!
