Видимо, обращение к музыкальной мелодии, напеву определяло не только акцентное соотношение в строке, но и сквозную паузацию. В произведениях, которые были рассчитаны на слуховое восприятие, мелодизм оставался главным критерием их функционирования и широкого распространения. Поэтому композиция многих баллад напоминает куплетное строение песни, где текст разбит одинаковыми риторическими рефренами. Было подмечено, что мелодия имитирует, фразовую интонацию и аналогия с музыкой возникает за счет преобладания голоса над смыслом, когда звучание речи в восприятии выдвигается на первый план, ввиду того, что смысл не дает четких и определенных представлений. Но мелодизм стиха, высокая упорядоченность текста в балладах всегда не отделимы от смыслового наполнения. И здесь нужно отметить, что тематическая заданность определяет во многих балладах ритмическое движение. Народные баллады в большинстве случаев пользуются семи ударным балладным стихом (септенарием; 4 3 ударения). Ср. начало баллады об «Охоте на Чевиоте»: he Percy ou of o humberla d A d a vow o God made he, ha he should hu o he mou ai s Of Chevio wi hi days hree, I he maugre of dough ly Douglas A d all ha wi h him be Древнейшие формы балладного септенария (семиударный ритмический период с сильной цезурой после четвертого ударения) знают только смежную рифму, объединяющую соседние периоды по 2 или 3 вместе, например «Охота на Чевиоте»: he Percy ou of or humberla d / a d a vow o God made he // ha he should hu o he mou ai s / of Chevio wi hi days hree // I he maugre of daugh y Douglas / a d all ha wi h him be // (Цезура – сечение стиха на определенном слоге; это перерыв в движении ритма, заранее заданный: она разбивает стих на два полустишия, объединенные и вместе с тем противопоставленные друг другу) В балладном септенарии часто встречается объединение двух соседних полустиший смежной цезурной рифмой, обыкновенно в нечетных стихах, которые могут между собой рифмоваться или нет (a-a b c-c b).
