There France had led the field since the ground-breaking 1925 Exposition International des Arts Dé coratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. Germany had not even been invited to that world exhibition – the effects of the Great War that had only ended a few years previously were still being felt. All great jewellery-designers were strongly committed to the Art Dé co style, which featured astringent sophistication in design and choice of materials: jewellers such as Cartier, Boucheron, René Lalique, Georges Fouquet and designers such as Jean Desprè s and René Boivin. From about 1928, this canon of forms occurs both in the work of Naum Slutzky at the Bauhaus and the German jewellery industry as represented by Theodor Fahrner Nachf. Gustav Brä ndle in Pforzheim and Jakob Bengel in Idar-Oberstein. The end of the First World War left much of Europe faced with an entirely new political and social situation: absolute monarchy was consigned to the dustbin of history and essays in democracy were the order of the day. The changed conditions and the new way of life associated with them required new forms of expression in - music, dance, architecture and painting – and of course also in design.

|Art Deco Textiles Thames & Hudson Alain-Rene H. |
Whether following the elitist decorative trends of Ruhlmann and Sü e, or the more functionalist movement led by Le Corbusier, the worlds of interior decoration and fashion went through radical changes that were both influenced by and reflected in the textiles of the day, and French artists and designers found themselves at the hub of the activity. Here is a rich cornucopia of fabric creations that will provide endless inspiration to designers and students, and enthral anyone keen to discover the key role of textiles at the cutting edge of Art Deco style. In Art Deco Textiles - The French Designers, hundreds of full-colour photographs bring to life the age when craftsmanship and industry worked side by side: Lyons silk and the first artificial fibres; carved wooden printing blocks and huge multiple-cylinder rotary presses; indigo and madder and aniline and alizarin dyes; tradition and progress. The decorative arts were given a fresh lease of life by the Paris International Exhibition of 1925, and experienced a boom that was to shape the lifestyles of a whole generation.
