Herbert George Wells was perhaps best known as the author of such classic works of science fiction as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. But it was in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of the day. A consummate storyteller, he made fantastic creatures and machines entirely believable; and, by placing ordinary men and women in extraordinary situations, he explored, with humor, what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress. He described his stories as a miscellany of inventions, yet his enthusiasm for science was tempered by an awareness of its horrifying destructive powers and the threat it could pose to the human race.

|The Cossacks and Other Early Stories Wordsworth Tolstoy L. |
In The Cossacks, for example, Tolstoy succeeds in combining a realistic description of the Caucasus with his hero' s personal vision of the locality. Nor is this success the only one in this remarkable period. Reading these early stories gives a penetrating insight into the workshop of a towering literary genius. Leo Tolstoy' s War and Peace and Anna Karenina, the greatest novels ever written, did not emerge from a vacuum.

|The Breaking Point: Short Stories Little, Brown and Company Daphne d.M. |
A woman yawning, an old man in carpet slippers, a child sent by its parents in irritation; and according to what I will, what I decide, their whole future will be decided. . . Sudden murder. Theft. Fire. It was as simple as that. ' In this collection of suspenseful tales in which fantasies, murderous dreams and half-forgotten worlds are exposed, Daphne du Maurier explores the boundaries of reality and imagination. Her characters are caught at those moments when the delicate link between reason and emotion has been stretched to the breaking point. Often chilling, sometimes poignant, these stories display the full range of Daphne du Maurier' s considerable talent. ' The apathy of Sunday lay upon the streets. Houses were closed, withdrawn. They don' t know, he thought, those people inside, how one gesture of mine, now, at this minute, might alter their world.
