This thesis, therefore, characterizes non-market external actors and their influence on firms’ configuration. However, the nature of this relationship, especially the concrete effects external actors have on the various elements of corporate strategy, is not yet fully examined. Findings indicate that pursuing a relational approach, participating collectively, being proactive, and integrating both market and political strategy all improve the effectiveness of CPA on public policy in this industry. Pressures exerted by the government are found to be the most important and it is often difficult for companies to deal with them. It is widely noted in academic literature that companies’ relationships with their environment are characterized by mutual influence and interdependence. Based on Hillman, Keim, and Schuler’s (2004) framework, hypotheses about CPA are proposed and tested using data from a survey conducted among 23 German electricity suppliers. In order to show possible reactions to these pressures, this thesis classifies strategic responses and summarizes the literature on corporate political activity (CPA).

Applications include friendship networks, personal business networks, R&D collaborations, strategic alliances, and trade among countries. After discussing the formal modeling approach, I put a focus on two types of linking goals. One is the gain of access to information and support by having many other actors in close reach; the other one is the bargaining position that is attained by being a broker for others. It turns out that the interaction of two goals leads to non-trivial dynamics of the network structure. Moreover, it can be observed that a typical feature of friendship networks is destroyed by incentives for advantageous network positions. Finally, I turn to a focal problem in strategic network formation: there is a general conflict between stability, based on individual interest, and efficiency, based on collective welfare. I study the sources of inefficiency by analyzing the external effects of link formation. In this book I model such a scenario and ask how this behavior affects the structure of social networks. Imagine a world where everybody is calculative in building relationships.

Based on the insights gained a set of emotions is created, which is then used in a framework to highlight the different factors influencing an entrepreneur' s emotional state. Furthermore, theories and different approaches about the measurement of emotions are discussed and on the base of these theories components are designed and prepared to form a questionnaire, with which the emotions of owner-managers are measured. Finally, the questionnaire is assembled and suggestions for further research are given. Therefore an overview over the most acknowledged emotion literature is conducted and emotion theories are discussed. Due to the rising importance of generation changes and their problems in SMEs the target of this study is the identification of the role as well as the measurement of emotions of entrepreneurs and owners of companies. In PFI procurement, private companies take on the obligation to build and manage a facility but provide only a small fraction of the project' s capital requirements. Despite the considerable amount of attention to various PFI related issues, little research has been conducted on the risk management practices of the financial institutions in PFI procurement. This book presents an exploratory study of the risk management strategies of financiers in PFI projects. The study analyses fourteen elite interviews with senior managers from financial companies and four detailed case studies which focus specifically on project risks and risk management strategies. The research concludes that virtually all financiers utilise fairly standardised and systematic risk management approaches, which centre on contractual risk mitigation, and a transfer of project risks to relevant parties. The market conditions post 2007-09 credit crunch present all PFI participants, including the financiers with new challenges and risks. Over the last decade, the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) has become preferred government option for the provision of different services to the public.
