To respond to the need for more research in this area, a case study is conducted, intending to explore a particular Tibetan boarding class from a Tibetan learner' s perspective. Underpinned by a theoretical framework of language ecology, this study explores the interrelation and interaction among language, learners, and contexts. The study is informed by multicultural education, a notion grounded and well studied in North American discourse. Yet in view of the variations between North American discourse and Chinese context, the notion of multicultural education can not be entirely applied to Chinese minority education. Suggestion on future improvement is also discussed. Additionally, little voice is heard from Tibetan themselves who are experiencing Chinese minority education. As a particular form of Chinese minority education in practice, Tibetan boarding class in inland China is relatively less well-studied.

Linguists are increasingly aware that external social contact can be as significant as internal grammatical structure in instigating and determining the direction of changes within a language' s syntax, phonology, and lexicon. Despite this fact, however, existing textbooks on the history of English give scant attention to this sociolinguistic perspective. The present work is designed to serve as a much needed supplement to such texts. The essays in the volume, written by recognized authorities in their fields, address each of the traditional periods of English. Topics covered include: the social status and uses of English, the relations between English and co-existent languages, the relations between varieties of spoken and written language, language as a political and socio-economic instrument, and attitudes towards varieties of English. The book should attract supplementary use in courses in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics as well as in the history of the English language. This is a collection of contributed essays on the social history of the English language. It will be the second volume in the Oxford Studies in Sociolinguistics series, edited by Edward Finegan.

Through a critique of Ball' s (1990) policy analysis framework this work explored the influences that led to the deregulation of international student recruitment(' the policy' )and the development of pathway programs in the Australian tertiary sector. Ball' s framework is extended to include Marginson and Rhoades' (2002) glonacal heuristic to analyse the global, national and local contexts that contributed to the creation and implementation of ' the policy' . The development of pathway programs was chosen as one aspect of implementation allowing a study that progressed from macro to microanalysis of ' the policy' cycle. The study examined the key ' players' who contributed to' the policy' s' creation, the ideologies that influenced these individuals and the contexts within which decisions were made.

Self-efficacy beliefs are important to youth' s success in accomplishing these tasks. Ample evidence suggests that self-efficacy beliefs are highly critical in task selection, persistence, and successful completion. Nevertheless, few studies to date have examined the predictors of self-efficacy beliefs and the role of efficacy beliefs in mediating the relationship between contextual factors and positive developmental outcomes. This book reports three studies that aimed to fill some major gaps in the self-efficacy literature. The studies examined 1) the multidimensionality of self-efficacy construct, 2) the individual, family, peer, and neighborhood predictors of adolescents' domain specific self-efficacy beliefs, and 3) the mediating role of domain specific self-efficacy beliefs in predicting adolescents' developmental outcomes. The findings underscore the importance of examining predictors and outcomes of self-efficacy beliefs in multiple domains. Adolescence is a period when young individuals face many challenging tasks such as establishing and maintaining healthy relationships, achieving in school, preparing for adult life, and becoming resilient in the face of adversities.
