Narrative analysis empowered research participants and allowed them to determine the most important themes in the area of breast augmentation research. Blending the narratives with sociological paradigms provided a means to better understand the phenomenon of the gifting of implants. The questions were designed to evoke awareness and reflection so that the respondents would reveal private thoughts. This research has explored the lives of 20 women who participated in the gifting of breast implants in order to examine how they felt their decisions evolved over time and how their decision to give or receive implants had affected their lives. The use of personal narratives allowed for the whole surgical experience to enlighten the researcher, not any particular aspect of the conversation. Most of the mothers expressed that they were comfortable with their decision to gift surgery to their daughters, despite knowing that their gift of augmentation would ultimately result in more surgery in the future. Almost all of the women in this research felt their choices were empowering ones that they were pleased about having made.

This study expands the existing research base by examining intact families that include a parent diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, using a valid and reliable measure of family functioning to determine differences between families with MS and comparison families, as well as differences in functioning within families with MS. Participant families (who were remarkably similar to the national population with MS) and comparison families completed the Family Assessment Measure – Version III and results were considered as a family unit, and further on the basis of patient gender, illness severity, and time since illness onset.

The foundress of the Good Shepherd Sisters, Saint Mary Euphrasia started a convent-based social service institution for vulnerable women and girls in Angers, France that became a postsecondary education system for girls selectively admitted by families, clergy, and the juvenile court system in the US. Convent education is underresearched in the history of women' s education and feminism in general. This study explores forty years of this unique form of secular education in a religious environment for girls twenty years after it all but vanished from our landscape. Conversion to Catholicism was not the focus. This study utilizes archival research, personal communications, oral histories, memoirs, and secondary sources to explore the experiences in the Good Shepherd schools for girls in the mid twentieth century US. The schools featured unconditional love, a structured environment, occupational training, and academic instruction that played a role in shaping girls’ identities as self-reliant women. Historically, convent education was used to impart a set of moral values that would lead to a productive life, both spiritually and socially.
