A case study was conducted in 1997 in nine Chinese tertiary institutions in a southwestern province in China. The solution to the conflicts should be sought through the development of cultural understanding. Expatriate English teachers, Chinese university students, teachers, and administrators participated in the survey. This study inquired into the potential sources of the problems encountered by expatriate English language teachers in China. On investigation, it seemed that the conflicts arose from the significant perceptual differences between Chinese students and expatriate teachers in some fundamental conceptions about language learning and teaching. This approach embraces a positive attitude towards differences by creating a cultural synergy in which differing views are respected and accommodated, mutual trust and confidence built, common agendas shared, cultural borders crossed, and problems resolved. Cultural incompatibilities derived from differing cultural values and beliefs seemed to have led to mismatches between teachers’ intentions and learners’ interpretations, to disparities in pedagogical and role expectations, and to conflicts in teacher-student relationships.

|What Is It REALLY Like Teaching English Language Learners?. Teachers' Perceptions on the Essence of Teaching Early Childhood English Language Learners Книга по Требованию Carlotta K. |
Research questions targeted the essential meaning and structure of the teacher- English language learner relationship, teachers' attitudes about diversity, preservice education on intercultural sensitivity and its contribution to educational cultural attitude, and the evidence and degree that life history reflects educational perspectives on cultural diversity. Cultural psychology, Furnham’s folk theory, and Bennett’s intercultural sensitivity theory provided the theoretical basis for this study. The study used purposive, criterion sampling of 4 certified kindergarten and 4 first grade teachers with minimum 5 years experience teaching English language learners. This phenomenological study explored meanings in the teaching experiences of early childhood teachers of English language learners and implications for culturally responsive teaching and student learning. Data were collected by indepth semi- structured face-to-face interviews and analyzed using Moustakas’s modification of the van Kaam method of analysis.
