This book demonstrated that social factors affect cultural groups differently because the historical response to cultural groups is different. Given the difference in wealth and other socioeconomic indicators, the academic outcomes of African American differ from that of European Americans. The argument presented in this book suggests that differences in cultural history presents differences in the way in which social factors influence different cultural groups. African American’s academic outcomes presents the academic outcomes of African Americans related to the historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in U. S. culture. This book demonstrates how culture or the difference in culture plays a key role in understanding the difference in academic outcomes. Further, findings in this book support the need for more research showing factors which promote academic success among African American students. In turn measure two cultural groups using the measuring stick of one of the cultures (European American cultures) places the other culture (African American culture) at a disadvantage.

Academic Orientations of African-American Adolescents. A Study in Miami-Dade County, Florida Книга по Требованию PAULA B. F.
A dynamic concept of ethnicity is necessary to determine what social factors define these students' academic orientation and achievement. This book provides a new perspective on racial identity formation and its impact on academic orientation for African-Americans. Previous studies have concentrated on why African-Americans adopt an adversarial academic orientation, while immigrant students incline toward a positive academic orientation. A critical factor of academic achievement and students’ relationship to school, peers, family, their community, and the broader society is their academic orientation, which is the student’s perception that education is or is not a path to succeed in American society. However, some African-American children manage to adopt a positive academic orientation and pursue educational success. In this study, I examine the relationship between academic orientation and ethnic identity formation. Most theories on ethnic identity are static ones, and do not fit into an accurate analysis of the African-American sample in this book. Many African-American high school students underachieve, drop out, and fail to pursue a higher education.

Latino Adolescent Academic Outcomes in the United States. Interplay of Schools, Peers and Families Книга по Требованию Igor R.
The primary reason for focusing on Latinos adolescents is that they consistently account for the highest high school dropout rate among the major ethnic groups in the U. S. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) data, I examined the interplay of school racial and socioeconomic composition, school social capital, family social capital, ethnic origin, and immigrant generational status on measures of school success, such as school grades and standardized test scores, while controlling for individual (e. g. , sex, age) and family (e. g. , family structure, SES) factors. Although the U. S. student population has grown increasingly diverse both in terms of ethnicity and immigrant generational status since the late 1980s, schools have become more racially and ethnically segregated.

ATTITUDES OF US AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS' TOWARD AFRICAN AMERICAN ENGLISH. Research in language identity and globalization. Книга по Требованию CHRISTOPHER G.
My project asks, in the context of a predominantly Eurocentric language attitude scholarship in which sociolinguistics, psychologists, educators, race theorists, language planners and policy makers, continue to define language attitudes among Africans and the Diaspora in terms of European languages, how could be it normal or acceptable in contemporary globalization to hope that non-metropolitan indigenous African languages, both in the Continent and the Diaspora, could transform one’s life for the better?

African American Women' s Breasts, Beliefs, and Cancer Screening Behaviors Ring of Silence: A Paradox of Womanhood. Книга по Требованию Eileen T.
This qualitative study used participant narratives to explore African American women' s past experiences and feelings concerning their breasts and breast cancer screening. Contradictory messages women receive from society and the media can have a long-term effect on how women perceive their bodies and how they value early detection related to breast cancer screening. A definiton of womanhood is needed that does not primarily focus on physical attributes but includes all aspects of being human. African American women experience higher breast cancer mortality and lower survival when compared with White women of comparable age and cancer stage. The literature is limited in studies that address the influence of past events on health promotion behaviors among women of diverse racial and cultural groups. Among women with private health insurance, only 27% of African American women receive mammograms. The purpose of this study was to explore associations between past events concerning women' s breasts and women' s current health behaviors pertaining to breast cancer screening.
