However, the Mexican Revolution set back wine production, especially in the north of the country. In 1699, Charles II of Spain prohibited wine making in Mexico, with the exception of wine for Church purposes. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Mexican wine and wine making began with the Spanish, who brought vines here from Europe. After Independence, wine making for normal purposes was no longer prohibited and production rose, especially in the last 19th and early 20th century. From then until Mexico’s Independence, wine was produced here only on a small scale. They found that grapevines did very well in the colony of New Spain (Mexico) and by the 17th century wine exports from Spain to the New World fell. Interest in wine, especially in the major cities and tourists areas has grown, along with Mexican wines’ reputation. Wine production here has been rising in both quantity and quality since the 1980s although competition from foreign wines and 40% tax on the product makes competing difficult within Mexico. Mexico is not traditionally a wine-drinking country, but rather prefers beer, tequila and mezcal.

|Virgile's Vineyard: A Year in the Languedoc Wine Country Hodder&Stoughton Patrick M. |
With Manu as his self-appointed guide, Patrick embarks on a tour of the region' s wine makers, a succession of lively encounters with growers as varied as the wines themselves. Interwoven are digressions into the history of the region and its wine-making, right back to the earliest plantings by the Greeks and Romans. Meanwhile, the author struggles to deal with his dilapidated inheritance – an unfamiliar and unpredictable world where the brambles have grown as tall as the olive trees, the water supply has just dried up and there is a ferocious animal under the roof tiles. Among them is a young local wine-maker called Virgile, who offers to initiate Patrick into the mysteries of each season' s work in the fields and in the cellar.

Ayrton Senna took pole from Alain Prost with a lap time that was over a second faster than Nigel Mansell' s 1987 time. Gerhard Berger and Nelson Piquet made up the 2nd row. Satoru Nakajima and Eddie Cheever both had a good qualifying session making good use of the their turbocharged engines advantage in the high altitude, whilst Mansell could only make 14th because of suspension problems. The session was dominated by Philippe Alliot' s terrifying crash after he lost control of his Larrousse, coming out of the Peraltada curve (which at the time was taken with a speed in excess of 240 km/h) that leads onto the pit straight.

Along with the wines produce further east in Touraine, Anjou-Saumur make what is collectively know as the "Middle Loire" (as opposed to the "Upper Loire" which includes the wine regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume. Within the Anjou wine region are several Appellation d' origine controlee (AOC)s responsible for a broad spectrum of wines including still red, white and rose produced with varying levels of sweetness. Extending across the Deux-Sevres, Maine-et-Loire and Vienne departements, the generic Anjou AOC appellation and its various sub-appellations encompasses vineyards across more that 151 communes. Wine expert Tom Stevenson describes the wines of the area as being a "microcosm of the Loire Valley", featuring wines made from every grape variety and in almost every style produced in the entire Loire wine region. Anjou wine is produced in the Loire Valley wine region of France near the city of Angers. The wines of region are often grouped together with the wines of nearby Saumur as "Anjou-Saumur".
