Сейчас мемуары и воспоминания выступают практическими синонимами, но раньше, например, в XVIII веке, русским эквивалентом французскому "memoires" служили "записки" как соответствующая калька с французского . Да и Пушкин, употребляя в своем русском тексте это слово именно в латинском написании, имел в виду, разумеется, не наше теперешнее его значение (во всяком случае, не только его), а прежде всего записи в дневник для памяти, или просто ежедневник. (В пушкинском словаре вообще нет слова "мемуары", а есть такая его русификация, как "меморий"). Колядич Т.М. Воспоминания писателей. Проблемы поэтики жанра. М., 1998. С. 41. Из его многими цитировавшегося письма к Вяземскому 1825 года: "Писать свои "memoires" заманчиво и приятно. Никого так не любишь, никого так не знаешь, как самого себя. Предмет неистощимый. Но трудно. Не лгать - можно; быть искренним - невозможность физическая. Перо иногда остановится как с разбега перед пропастью - на том, что посторонний прочел бы равнодушно" . Пушкин А.С. Собр. соч. Белинский во "Взгляде на русскую литературу 1846 года" сформулировал следующее положение ("более оптимистическое", чем у Пушкина): "Самые мемуары, совершенно чуждые всякого вымысла , если они мастерски написаны, составляют как бы последнюю грань в области романа, замыкая ее собою".
